Singer and songwriter Samia Malik has announced a Autumn tour from Sunday October 27th 7.30pm at Rich Mix – Friday 29th November 7.30pm at Midlands Arts Centre which will span the whole of England. Samia’s bold brand of fusion music extends and subverts the traditional Urdu Ghazal form to explore contemporary issues around identity, race and gender through Samia’s powerful original songs written in Urdu and English. Throughout the tour, Samia will host a series of audience Q&As and workshops, exploring core themes that have inspired her music. Samia is also a visual artist: her live shows are supported by translations and projections of her original visual art. She has collaborated with acclaimed world-class artists including celebrated Indian danseuse and activist Mallika Sarabhai and ‘sitarist to the stars’ Baluji Shrivastav OBE: her dynamic, evolving work has thrilled international audiences across Europe, India and the States
Samia will be joined on tour by internationally respected Italian guitarist Giuliano Modarelli, ‘exceptional and versatile’ multi instrumentalist Sianed Jones (on violin, keyboards and bass guitar) and renowned tabla maestro Sukhdeep Dhanjal.
The series of workshops will be held with local community groups, including The Bank in Eye, Suffolk. Each workshop is designed to help promote understanding and deeper appreciation of Indian music or focus on songwriting skills. The community groups will also be invited to join Samia on stage to share their new skills.
The tour will also include the launch of a new album ‘Samia Malik Live at NAC’ a new live recording rooted in Ghazal and Indian classical music and fused with flashes of Arabic, Bhangra, Flamenco, Latin, World Folk, Bollywood, Eastern European, jazz and unparalleled improvisation.
